this week's interesting find is this interactive road trip website by Neal Fun!

every few seconds you can vote to move foward, honk the horn, or change the radio station! It's SUCH a cool and novel idea, and reminds me of grinding geoguessr before it got paywalled! His other projects are a lot of fun too--I really like the Internet Artifacts one. you can behold the first lol with your very own eyes!

This website was recommended by a fellow Neocities denizen, Myrrh! So be sure to check them out too!

a while ago i stumbled on this absolutely bizarre website that's shockingly still up, and was shockingly posting content up until 2021 judging by the bernie sanders mitten meme collection (wow, what a time capsule already). it's the most calcified version of i-can-haz-cheezburger internet humor i've seen in a LOOOONG time.

it's called "Fun Cage", in what i must imagine is an acknowledgement that in order to think it's fun you have to be locked in a cage for several years with no other things to entertain you. even then it might be a stretch.

honestly, this is a pretty generous selection of the lackluster goods they're offering

it makes sense that the 80 real people and 800000 bots still using facebook could keep this website alive, but it's truly fascinating to comb through as a modern human. i found this one collection of sexist and highly unfunny rage comics that just really made me be like "oh yeah, the early internet sucked dick and cock and was pretty not fun most of the time", so if you need a bullet to tank your nostalgic yearning today i can't recommend this site enough!

my friend recently showed me a HUUUUGE collection of development art for various animated shows and movies!! It's really cool!

my favs so far are:

Cats Don't Dance: really interestingly, this is very heavy in character model sheets and has barely any development/exploration art. It's really cool to see since a lot of "art of" books typicaly focus more on the blue sky development art and less on how designs are dialed in to be production ready. also, a lot of the notes on the model sheets refer to "color computers". It's a neat look into how artists were adjusting to the technology shift!

The Lorax: because you can watch the process as they decide to make the Onceler a Christopher Drew-looking man instead of a fuzzy green guy. It's amazing to see the aesthetic shift from "silly little guy" to "guy who says he's a silly little guy, but then writes a ukelele song about how you're a bitch because you didn't kiss him".

Little Witch Academia: I know nothing about the show but love how expressive the character sheets are!

but there's a LOT more cool stuff in there, stuff i'd never even heard of!! It's a lot of fun to click through and get little glimpses behind the scenes!

there was an epic fandom meltdown on tumblr over the weekend, about the show 9-1-1. So WARNING!!

SPOILERS FOR S8 E15 OF 911 AHEAD!

i tried not to actually spoil it on this page, but if you click any of the links you'll be spoiled immediately.

basically, they killed off a major character for the first time in the series. and fans were NOT handling it well.

here is a selection of some of the angriest fan reactions.

WE GOT A PETITION TO FIRE THE SHOWRUNNER!!

people are coping so hard it's drifting into genuine "secret sherlock episode" levels of theory crafting. this user questions if maybe the crew shot two versions of the show to air based on audience reactions. this one wonders if maybe it's all a distraction to keep people from realizing a ship will become canon. reading into religious symbolism, reading into show symbolism, and a lot of what's potentially satire but i can't even tell at this point.

while i have tried to watch and like 911 for years (i love the setpieces, not into the character drama), i don't have a good beat on the tone or overall quality of the show. so i talked to a friend who is a fan for some perspective! She said the decision to kill this character made sense, he had kinda worked through all his storylines, and the show covers heavy enough topics regularly that she wasn't shocked by a character death. so make of that what you will!!

BUT, there is another side to the story. The writer/EP who is responsible for the decision seems like he's on a bit of an ego trip.

here are a few of his most insane interview quotes:

overall? seems like fandom doing what it usually does and wayyyy overreacting to something that isn't a huge deal. i get it might be a comfort show, but it's a show about first responders! they have episodes where civilians die by the HUNDREDS. it's also pretty typical to wait a while before you start killing characters because, as my friend said, that's when you start running out of storylines. but it also feels like this writer also did a terrible job reading the room on how the audience would recieve this, and should have come up with different answers than "IT WAS TIME FOR AN EPIC DEATH" LMAO.

if you yearn for some art drama of yesteryear, before it was just a bunch of youtubers infighting about ??? i have no idea dude i'm not watching 5 hour long streams to find out why you hate each other, check out this tumblr blog!

A Shrine to the Queen Mother of Tracers

it chronicles the offenses of a deviantart denizen who traced comissions.

now, DICLAIMER--i'm not anti tracing, if i'm being totally honest. as someone who has had their art traced before i can say, from the bottom of my heart, who cares?? *BUT* this person took money for their work, and was hilariously antagonistic against people trying to point out their lies. this blog is a time capsule to a pre-jpeg tuber world and i had a lot of fun going through it.

Holy shit, i spent alllll of my sunday reading this insane saga about musician Emilie Autumn:

parts 1, 2, 3, 4, 4.5, 5, 6, 7, 7.5!

TW for pretty problematic discussion around mental health, SA, and ED (from Emilie and her supporters, not from OP!)

I was in the "nerdy theater kid goth" online circle when I was growing up (yknow, the kids who used to roleplay as vampires on xat but also ran poptropica blogs) so a lot of my friends were super into her music, especially FLAG. i personally wasn't interested in anything but Enchant, but I remember hearing rumblings of drama floating around tumblr.

even if you have never heard of her, it's well worth a read just for the tour through the 2000s and 2010s online fandom world!

i love using offbeat search engines like ecosia--not for privacy, but because the search results are WILD. Like, borderline unusably wild. but if you're just bored and thirsting for the magic of the old internet and stumbling on something super whackjob it's amazing.

like this INCREDIBLE 2008-esque photoshop competition forum that was active up until 2020!

there is SO much fun stuff on here, but this thread is one of my favorites. it displays the full, super charming range of skill level from boomer to insane. but also features my favorite creator on the site.

Drivenslush is a beautiful enigma. Their creations are puzzling and sometimes terrifying, but oh my GOD do they have a vision. they are incredibly prolific, often entering multiple times into the same competition.

this image is titled "Confrontation infront of the Bug Hotel". AMAZING!!!!

While I don't always understand it, i LOVE their work and the dedication they have to breaking images into building blocks and making something completely new. it's so imaginative and refreshing! they have something incredible to say and i'm so grateful they found a way to share it with us.

Drivenslush is my personal fav but i highly highly recommend you take a look around the site! There's a lot of wild and fun stuff.

This week's interesting find is another spooky one in honor of halloweeeeeeeeen wooo! its a website called housecreep, where you can check to see if anyone has had paranormal experiences in the place you live!! SPOOOKY!! the website is a little spammy and hard to navigate (they reeeally want you to upgrade to premium) but i like that they have a specific category for just hauntings you can check out that's not flooded with true crime stuff.

Honestly tho the appeal of this site to me isn't necessarily the information you can look up, but the pranks you could play! Anyone who makes a free account can make a report about any address... you can make a report on your friends' apartment and then be like "whoa dude look what i found?!" hehe

HAPPY HALLOWEEN MONTH!!!

to get in to the spirit, here's my interesting find of the week: a website called CreepBay!

at first glance it's a standard product-based blog that's, honestly, just a lot of ads. but it feels a lot more curated than blogs of a similar style, and they spotlight small businesses and creators on etsy. probably going to be visiting again to look for some unique presents in the future!

but aside from all the ads, the REAL treasure is in their non-ad blog posts. they have categories for paranormal activity, peoples' experiences with haunted objects, and roasting weird e-bay sellers. their weird art category is full of inspiration and creators to dive deeper into!

whether you can stomach the ads or the fashion is your style or not, this blog is absolutely run by somebody with a specific voice and taste and i am SO here for it.

i'm so charmed by and obsessed with this youtube channel. the humor is so like genx/boomer but the editing is so top notch. they give so many shits and it's so SILLY! pure fun.

if you you ever wondered, "why are the self help books in the same section as the prayer books in publix?", this video answers a LOOOT of those questions. I really recommend giving it a watch! it blew my mind.

I shared this vid with a friend, who then turned me on to this podcast, which is very entertaining!

so if you hate books that are essentially barely-researched journalists claiming they have a deep and profound understanding of how to hack mankind's thought process or some other business bro shit, you'll love this rabbit hole!

There's something going on with Lasik.

A while ago, i stumbled on a youtuber sharing his experience with lasik eye surgery. it was like a horror movie--so of course, i needed more content like that.

the search led me to a channel basically saying Lasik was awful, sharing peoples' testimonials, etc. it sounds horrible for the people involved, but also was a bunch of reused clips...? i don't doubt the pain of the people giving their testimonials, but the packaging feels fear mongering and a bit vindictive. it didn't feel like i'd stumbled on an awareness channel, more like a personal vendetta.

as someone whose eyesight is pretty good, has always been pretty good, i kinda just put it out of my mind as a "wow good thing I don't have to worry about that".

but i'm a huge fan of medical crime and business scam content, so you KNOW predatory plastic surgery/veneer tech content was on my radar. This youtuber i really like uploaded a lasik video recently that has left me again feeling confused.

I really feel for the people in the testimonials, it sounds like hell to go through. and I don't doubt that there are doctors out there pushing surgeries on people just to make money when they're really not great candidates (which is what most of the bad experiences seem to come down to, people with preexisting conditions that should have been excluded from eligibility)--but there's also just SO much fear mongering around this specific procedure, it seems like maybe people are getting worked up and assuming the worst of their doctors and results preemtively.

The comments on the video are also interesting. Everyone is dickriding for lasik SO hard, claiming it's the best thing that ever happened to them. That's ALSO suspicious and feels like the pro-lasik crowd is overcompensating?

I only know one person who underwent Lasik surgery and she never talks about it. so i'm not sure what's going on here. but there's a weird little battle happening on the internet over medical issues, being fought by people that are not doctors and are mostly informed by their "own research" and i just think both sides are sketchy. the medical system in america is legit just for real evil, but also doubting doctors and science is a real slippery slope.

if you've had lasik or have thoughts on the matter i'd love to hear them! let me know here: boredomarchive@pm.me. Not a doctor or anything. just curious!
