somehow, i completely missed pokemon as a cultural phenomenon. but now with my boyfriend's help, i'm playing it for the first time!

my friend Ridge wanted granular updates on my progress, and i thought it might be fun to put them on a web page to document my journey as someone completely uninitiated.

Liam said this was the best game to start out with! i went with fire red instead of leaf green because, even tho green is my favorite color, fire is badass and leafs are boring.

full transparency--i'm already at fuschia city. but not doing a very good job xD. so i'll probably start with my thoughts in real time, then go back and add my thoughts on earlier parts of the game later!

OVERALL THOUGHTS:

LITTLE GUY ARCHIVE

an incomplete* collection of the pokemon i've caught, what i've named them, and my thoughts on them

---------- SLICEY ---------- he is my starter pokemon and he is very epic
---------- PLINTH ---------- i didnt like him at first, but then he got some cool moves and i like him now
--------- BOOZE --------- he's SO COOL and silly! but i think i'll never get all the way to his final evolution, i was pretty careless with his life up top
--------- GUZZLER --------- i didn't like her at first because i think meowth looks weird and creepy, but my boyfriend said she evolved into a normal cat so i kept her around. and i'm so glad i did because i JUST REALIZED the money from her Pay Day attack stacks!!
-------- CUT KNIFE -------- i love this pokemon, this is my favorite so far!! whenever i run into wild versions of this pokemon i always run away because i dont want to hurt them
------ POOHSHEHER ------ named after Ally's 'it's winnie the pooh's turn... and SHE will--' bit in Fantasy High Junior Year. this is the only good psychic pokemon imo
------- GUILT ------- thunder doggy YAYYYY
------- DEPRESSING ------- backstory bums me out too much :( i'm afraid to use them in battle bc they've already been through so much, and feel extra bad when they faint
------- CUTIE ------- another epic evolution!! i love how now he looks mad about hearing drama. like >:0
--------- SPAGHET -------- OKAYYYY he evolved and he rules i love this guy!! dragon types are quickly becoming my favorite
------- CARE BEARS ------- i just got this one too and dont know anything about it yet. i've had its trio attack used against me tho and that seems pretty sick, so excited to level this one up!
--------- MILKHOG --------- THIS EVOLUTION IS SOOO COOL i love this guy!
------- CHROMEY ------- really scary, looks like a triceratops which is cool
------- COWARD ------- annoyingly hard to catch but i really like kangaroos (and the baby is really cute!)
------ LIAMSCHAMP ------ actually, i tried to draw this one based off Liam's verbal description for the background of this page before i saw or caught it, but the result wasn't as funny as i wanted. i'm really glad i caught him tho because he's COOOOOOL AS HELLLLL

------ GORELORD ------ seeing his guts creeps me out
---------- UH OH ---------- the red spots on his head gross me out, like the pustules from that episode of x files where the bug lays its eggs in your face and you die

RELEASED

ANNOYING-(RELEASED) named that because i thought they were really annoying to fight. i kept them around a while because they were my best flying pokemon, but released them once i had better flying guys
ILLEGAL-(RELEASED) name is because he started as that caterpillar that has 'WEED' in its name. released him because he evolved into beedrill but still only had the move HARDEN
-- POOPER-(RELEASED) -- she was very cute, and i would have kept her now i think! but at the beginning of the game i was reeeaaally trying to keep only 6 pokemon at any given time so none would be stuck in the box
-- HERNIA-(RELEASED) -- idk i dont really have strong feelings on a lot of the bird characters
-- TY BABY-(RELEASED) -- eyes look like a ty baby plushy
--- ALICE-(RELEASED) --- because i think the 2009 remake of alice in wonderland was very cringe for saying 'she's so odd!' and then giving us the most boring female protagonist ever. i really liked her second form, she looked like a wine aunt. i was sad when she evolved to her final form because i kinda thought she'd evolve into tangela
-- SCARY-(RELEASED) -- weird and scary! but i liked encountering them bc they were very high level so gave a lot of xp
- HIGHHAT-(RELEASED) - very cool!! but didnt use him very much so released him
-- UGLY-(RELEASED) -- very annoying to fight, very annoying to look at. released immediately after catching, never played with him once
- NUTSHOT-(RELEASED) - finally leveled him up so i can get him outta here! i'll admit, he grew on me, but i just dont think i'd use him that much
--- NARK-(RELEASED) --- ate like 26 balls at the safari game for some reason. i dont like him
NOT AGAIN-(RELEASED) had to catch and release this guy like a billion times because i thought the 2nd form was really ugly and didn't know how to evolve him. BUT LIAM TOLD ME AND NOW IM FREE
JELLO SHOT-(RELEASED) boob armor-dillo

TATTLETAIL-(RELEASED) wonder if his face structure was the inspiration for the 'IMA FIRIN MY LAZERS!' thing. because i havent got it yet, but my bf said he has a lazer move?
REEPISLEEP-(RELEASED) caught her in a bucket with a peach ring and put her back outside, where she belongs :')
- TORQUEE-(RELEASED) - she's cool and pretty strong. idk no strong feelings
- COOL GUY-(RELEASED) - 8)
SNAPBRACE-(RELEASED) very annoying do not enjoy
*UNNAMED*-(RELEASED) button spammed and missed the chance to name them :( caught him so i could fill out my pokedex without having to play with snapbrace at all because they're both very annoying
SMURFCHAIN-(RELEASED) absolutely LOVE how this little guy looks but do not enjoy playing with him. but honestly still a very very big fan, visually!
- TIM ALLEN-(RELEASED) - too humanoid, very weird choice imo

*i have been playing the game for a bit, and released a lot of pokemon very early on because i didnt like keeping them in the computer.

PROGRESS UPDATE 1

in fuschia city, preparing to take on the dumb gymn leader. psychic pokemon are boring and these guys' attitudes suck.

also sad that the safari game is a different mini game, and we can't use it to level up our pokemon :( BUT i just realized you can trigger pokemon attacks by making your character face in different directions without technically taking a step! sooo excited to abuse that next time i get in there!

PROGRESS UPDATE 2

beat the fuschia gym guys--they were annoying, as predicted xD

i have been getting CUCKED by old guys!!! i want the nessie pokemon sooo bad, and Liam said someone gives it to me so i keep thinking its these old guys!! first i thought it was the old guy at safari world who lost his teeth, but i just got a move. and then i thought it was this guy across the water that i had to learn surf to get to, but he just had another dumb move!! WHEN WILL I EVER LEARN!?

PROGRESS UPDATE 3

not a lot of progress made--I've mostly been grinding the safari zone to try and catch all the pokemon i'd seen there!

OH!! and while i was at it, i saw a shiny! i didn't catch it, but it was sooo cool just to see it!

i tried going to the ice caves, but they were kind of hard! so i think maybe i'm not supposed to go there yet. my plan now is to finish up in saffron city and try and get the pokemon i'm missing on the mainland before i commit to going off to the island. but my pokedex says i can find koffing and grimer in celadon city?? i have no idea where. time to see if i can outsmart this game for baby children.

PROGRESS UPDATE 4

I WENT TO SAFFRON CITY TO BEAT TEAM ROCKET AND I GOT THE NESSIE POKEMON!!!!!! I LOVE HER SO MUCH!!!! i have not been updating much bc i have become obsessed with making myself a crochet plushie, so have been spending my spare time working through my WIPs

I also found the abandoned electric factory or whatever it is! that was FUN!!! i loooved how it was a secret you could only get to with surf! i didn't know that you were supposed to catch that bird at the end tho xD i thought if i beat him he'd like, talk to me or something.
